Here are more issues to consider when optimizing your website. All these tips are related to optimizing your web page for gaining higher rankings within the top 3 search engines, Google, Yahoo & MSN. Read carefully and do well.

Frames
Not all search engines support frames. Some are not able to "read" or follow from a frameset page to the content frames and index texts. If your website consists of frames, and you cannot redesign it, you can solve this problem by putting the content of an optimized page with the links to other pages into the "NOFRAMES" HTML tag.

External and Internal JavaScript
Do not use too many embedded scripts on the page, because your keyword prominence will be reduced, and thus your page will be ranked lower on search engines. We advise putting the script in an external file or move it as close to the closing Body tag as possible.

Please note that excessive use of scripts in the top area of the page dilute keyword prominence and therefore affect your rankings. Put the script in an external file or move it as close to the closing Body tag as possible.

File robots.txt Allows Spidering
Robots.txt is a text file placed in the root directory of a website to tell robots how to spider the website. Only robots that comply with the Robots Exclusion Standard will read and obey the commands in this file. Robots.txt is often used to prevent robots from visiting some pages and sub directories not intended for public use.

However, if you want search engine robots to spider your site, there should not be any disallowing commands included within this file for all or particular search engine robots.

Here are some issues related to optimizing your web page for gaining higher rankings within the top 3 search engines, Google, Yahoo & MSN. It is very important you read these tips and advice to find out just how "search-able" your web pages really are.

HTML Page Size:
Page size matters because search engines limit size of a cached page. For example, Google will only cache a full page if the size of its HTML is less than 101 Kb (images and external scripts are not included). Yahoo! caches text of up to 500 Kb per page. This means if your HTML page is too large, search engines will not cache the full page, and only the top part of the text will be search-able. Tip: Try and make your pages fall within the page size of 10 to 50Kb's.

Page Last Modified:
This attribute shows how old the document is. It is taken from the server response to HTTP request. You can see if your page has been updated lately. Tip: Try and update your page every 3-5 days, either with new content or added content to support the text already on the page.

Same Color Text And Background:
If the color of the text on a page is close to the background color, the text becomes almost invisible. As a rule, this technique is employed to populate a page with keywords without damaging its design. Since it is considered as spam by most search engines, we suggest that you do not try it. NOTE: Without you even knowing it, you may have text that is the same color as the background as in, your "text box" background color is black so you have text that is white, the same color as your main page background.

Tiny Page Text:
If a page uses Cascading Style Sheets and there are fonts smaller than 4 pixels, they are reported as tiny texts. Most search engines consider tiny texts as an abusive practice - this is why you should avoid using them. Note: Most website use this type of tiny text style to make it harder for visitors to read their "get out of jail free" notes. Tip: Make sure your text is readable and obvious.

Immediate Keyword Repeats:
The same keyword repeated one after the other a few times, for example air tickets on-line, air tickets, air tickets, air tickets, air tickets in Hong Kong is a questionable trick. For this example, there will be three repetitions reported, because the keyword was placed three times in a row after it was used first. Such repetitions are considered as spam by most search engines.

Controls:
If the page has HTML tags (HTML only, not other scripts) that create controls, it will be seen by search engines. Try to avoid too many controls on your page, especially in the top area, since it may decrease your keyword prominence and result in low rankings.

Keyword Body Weight

Your keyword should constitute at least 2 percent of the overall presence through out your content body text. This should include all your heading tags as well. Ideally, the overall keyword weight for the content body page should rate between 4-7% in total. Any more would constitute the possibility of indicating to a search engine that your page is jammed with keyword spam. If less than 4%, the search engine would rate your page low in importance and credibility for your chosen keyword.

Also keep in mind the possibility of using different forms of your keywords. While ranking, search engines consider not only direct matches of keywords, but also their various alterations. For instance, for the query "web hosting," search engines will take into account the occurrences of such words as "host", "hosting", "webhosts" etc. on your pages. In addition, the modification of your keyword makes the content more user-friendly, so your page doesn't look like a readability puzzle stuffed with one and the same keyphrase. And remember: a good technique for writing page copy is to write naturally, in your own style.

SEO 10 Things NOT TO DO V.1.

When designing a web page always make sure your not designing a potential SE dumping page. Always keep in mind the Google experience.

10 Things NOT to do ...

1. Do NOT have any content text that is the same colour as the background colour of your page. This will get your page dumped. This is a commonly used way of deceiving search engines to hide keywords and key-phrases and it is easily detected.

2. Do NOT repeat keywords frequently throughout the content of your page. This will be read as spamming or jamming the page with irrelevant, non sensible sentences.

3. Do NOT use flash on your front page (e.g. index, default, main). Google and the rest do not or cannot index flash text and will leave your page as soon as the spidering robot hits the flash embedded media.

4. Do NOT have large size images on your front page. By large size images we mean images that are over 20KB. The best optimized image size for your front page is up to 10KB for your logo and subsequent images should be no more than 5KB. Using only a logo image for your front page is the best way to ensure your page is indexed by Google and all other major SE's.

5. Do NOT use "comments" to place keywords into your page. This is easily detectable and regarded as keyword jamming.

6. Do NOT continually submit your web site to Google, Yahoo or MSN. This could be seen as an automated URL submitter tool and therefore, be given the dumpthisurl tag.

7. Do NOT duplicate content. Make every page unique. Make every page stand alone for it's individual content, rather than re-hashing the same content from similar pages within your own site.

8. Do NOT place every page into it's own sub folder on your server. Have at least 30 pages accessible from the root directory at your URL.

9. Do NOT have more affiliate links than internal links in your front page. Doing this will cause the SE robot to "think" your just an affiliate with a sub-domain.

10. Do NOT have content that is mis-spelt. Accurate spelling contributes to successful search results.

SEO Tip - The Importance of Accurate Titles

One main department of online marketing is SEO or search engine optimization. This specific area is an essential part of many parts that make up successful online marketing businesses. Here we are going to look at one aspect of SEO which is the Title tag.

The Title tag is located in the "head" of a web page source code is one very important, if not mandatory issue for any web site. The title tag displays the title of your web site in the browser that your viewing the web page in. Having a good, well informed title gives the search engines a glimpse of what your web site or web page is all about.

The title tag is the first thing search engine spider or robots seeks for clarity of what your web site is about. It then asses the rest of the page and sometimes the rest of the site based only on the title. This is of course obvious that having the "right" title is most important.

The title should be a direct description like reference. You should not use stop words like and, so, the, for .. the list goes on and on. If you have too many stop words, the robot may cease scanning the rest of the title, and the rest of the page content, description, links etc. So to be safe, try not to use stop words and be more direct with your title.

The title should also be no longer than 17 words. It should also be no shorter than 3 words. The reason is because spammers or black hat types long ago jammed the title tags with every conceivable keyword associated with their web site theme trying to get top listings for their sites. The robots are wise to this type of technique and have made their changes to spot the black hat niches and basically dump anyone trying this technique to oblivion. So don't try it. It's a long way back from the end of the www black hole and you'd more than likely be tagged as a suspicious SEO type, for years and you don't want that!

What is a good title?

Good question. One that will evolve and change as the search engine robot becomes more intelligent over time.

A good title reflects the main theme of your web site. Specifically related to the exact content of your web page. No overstating or fluffy advertising type words, just the real deal.

An example.

Lets say your web site is about Wooden Tables. You make your wooden tables at your warehouse and sell them online. Ok, now here's the stuff.

A good title would be "wooden tables hand made". Notice there's only 4 words in the title and the words are lower case. That's enough to convey an over view of what your web site is about. A search engine robot would scan the rest of your web site based on that type of title. Creating a simple title is the easiest way to have your site listed in Google, Yahoo & MSN and be deemed relevant by these search engines.
